SNAIL ROCKS 2022 – REVIEWS
“Galvanizing guitars! Heavenly harmonies! Convincing compositions! A rockin record! Hear it now!!”
– Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Tiran Porter
“Snail is a staple of Santa Cruz music history and they continue to write their history with another classic record!“
-American Idol Alum & Frontiers Music Recording Artist, James Durbin
I’m a longtime fan of these guys. This album is pure Snail, rock n roll at its best. Their music gets you up dancing from jump. More of an invocation than an anthem, “We can make a difference “ is every old hippies mantra. Do yourself a favor, get the cd and keep it in your player and turn it up. These guys can raise the dead!
-Award winning Artist/Producer, Ginny Mitchell
A nice surprise to see Bob and Ken are still rockin’, after more than 50 years! A long time Santa Cruz tradition stays true to form and shape. The characteristic vocals, and guitars that continue to stake their “Claim to Rock” with no excuses, just a joyful noise! From the first riff of “Believe in Tomorrow” you know these guys mean business (but are actually really nice guys).

The new Snail album “Snail Rocks” feels like standing right in front of a great and tight band and having great music bounce off you for 48 minutes. The opening song “Believe In Tomorrow” starts with a addictive, strong and uplifting “hook” that has you singing along within the first 5 seconds, and each successive song is equally strong.
Snail is built upon the life-long brotherhood of guitarist/vocalists Ken Kraft and Bob O’Neil, and that close friendship is felt with each song on this album. On “Losing You” they use blues riffs, a fat bass and drums, plus strong vocals to conjure up a groove that has your head bobbing with no conscious effort. For guitar enthusiasts, the tones and dexterity displayed are cool enough to make even non-musicians head to the nearest guitar shop.
Ken Kraft has for decades been recognized among both fans and musicians as one of the finest players not only in California, but in music..period. Bob O’Neil is the left hand to Kenny’s right, plus Bob sings his ass off, very few bands have the talents of guitarists of this caliber.
Craig Owens (bass-voc) and Gary “Killer” Andrijasevich (drums-voc) are their perfect matches as a rhythm section, laying fat spacious grooves for the guitars and vocals to fly over. “All You Can Do” and “Love Is On The Way” show a band that’s incredibly tight both musically and vocally.
“Without You” gives me a vision of The Beatles going to Bakersfield, reminds me that Bob and Kenny once worked with Buck Owens and bring here another strong hook that has you singing along before you realize you are.
“We Can Make A Difference”, sang by bassist Craig Owens, is a personal favorite. Solid, funky and straight ahead bass groove and an excellent song using music to inspire us to connect with humanity…no politics but definitely a strong and needed message.
This entire album is, in my view, “All Killer, No Filler”. Excellent work by a very special group of musicians, “Snail Rocks” is not only an excellent recording, it’s a lesson on how create and craft good music.
